Who's D.Colin?

     Originally from Bridgeport, CT, D. Colin is a writer, performer, visual artist and educator living in Troy, NY.  As an undergraduate at Southern Connecticut State University, she majored in English with a concentration in African American literature and creative writing. She went on to attain a Masters in Africana Studies and is currently completing her thesis for a Masters in English from University at Albany.

     D. Colin is the author of Dreaming in Kreyol, a collection of poems and prose paying homage to her Haitian heritage and history. She has been a featured poet throughout the country including the Nuyorican Poet’s Café, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the New York State Writers Institute and venues in over 10 states.  She has also featured internationally in Toronto, Glasgow and London. 

     D. Colin is a VONA Voices alumna studying in 2011 with Ruth Forman and in 2018 with Patricia Smith. She is an Arts Center of the Capital Region and a Breathing Lights grant recipient. D. Colin was also the 2016 poet in residence for Voices of Community put on by Sandglass Theater and Next Stage Arts Project in Vermont. 

In 2012 and 2018, she competed at the National Poetry Slam with Cap City Slam (formerly Nitty Gritty Slam). The team is currently ranked 24th in the country. She has also competed at the Women of the World Poetry Slam twice and regionally at the QEW Slam 2016 winning 3rd place, in 2017 winning 1st place and at the WordxWord Women's Invitational in 2018 winning 1st place.

     Her theater work includes playing “Lady in Red” from for colored girls who considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf, “Maima” from Eclipsed and reenactments of Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. D. Colin is a recipient of the League of Women Voters Presidential Award for her original script and reenactment of Sojourner Truth and has done numerous performances with Black Theater Troupe of Upstate NY. This year at Capital Rep Theater, she performed her original work, Simone, a one woman show blending poetry and theater.

     In 2016, she started and currently curates a weekly poetry/spoken word series called “Poetic Vibe” at Troy Kitchen which was voted “Best Poetry Night” in Best in the Capital Region covered by The Alt. She was also voted 2018’s “Best Poet” in The Alt.When she’s not working on poetry, she paints and makes Afrocentric bohemian inspired accessories for her line, Empress Bohemia. She’s also an HEOP Writing Tutor at Siena College and the Administrative Director for the Albany Social Justice Center. But in her rare spare time, she likes to eat pistachio ice cream, visit used book stores and think of ways to change the world.
